To have, or to have not…That is my question to you
This first tutorial session is ironically called A Product Photographers Kit! Ironic, because if you know anything about me now and are full members doing the course, you will be aware I really sound like a stuck record as I constantly repeat myself with the line “Being a product photographer does not mean you need lots of kit”. It is a delicate line to tread, as being a pro working photographer myself, I do have a lot of options available to me. This is necessary so I can react quickly to client requests on the day of the shoot.
If you are not working for a client on a job with a small timeframe, you should be able to plan out your work more and think about what you really need. What are the bare essentials that will get you through your next project? Is your kit fit for your purpose and will it enable you to do what you want to? Those are the questions you should be asking yourself. Experience of course may be a factor in you knowing this, but that is what this is all about. Start small, learn, grow and develop over time in a sustainable way.

Anyway! Back to session 1 here. I have had requests to talk about what kit I would recommend if setting up a studio. Not everyone will be setting up a studio. I know. Some of you may be working in other more confined spaces. So, I have approached this subject with a little apprehension. I could be seen to be hypocritical if I am recommending you have a pile of stuff. To be clear! I am not saying you should have anything other than what you already own. However, it is not a bad thing that you have in the back of your mind items that could make your life easier when working in the future. Understanding the ‘why’ you could find something useful is different to me saying you should have this…Does that make sense!
On the day of recording
As it happened, on recording day, we had scaffolders all over the building and the amount of noise and distraction was immense. But I carried valiantly on, making the best of it I could and produced what in the end was a rather amusing take on A Product Photographers Kit!
